Last Friday with Dada back to work and finally bearable temps, Ben and I ventured to the Catholic school playground on the next block. It's a wonderful playground but hours are tricky as you can't go during school or sometimes even after-school when their own programs use it.
On this day we weren't there long before another group of kids showed up with their nanny. Turns out they were all 8 and 9 years old and though I begged Ben to keep his distance and "let the big kids play," the two boys really took to him. Max and Sammy gave Ben rides on their skateboards (one was a long-board as I was frequently reminded,) and played basketball with him. They dug out fresh snow for him to eat and complimented his shoes. They quizzed me about where he would go to school and told me all about their families. Max told me how he didn't mind being an only child because his Dad was his best friend and rode BMX with him a lot and if he had siblings, he'd have to share. As mama to a Monkey who will likely be an only, this made my heart melt.
I prodded Ben that it was time for lunch and Sammy informed me we actually had one hour and ten minutes because lunch is at 12:30:). When we finally walked away for good Max said, "aww that was fun, Ben was really cute." and Sammy replied, "Yeah, and you can tell he's gonna be cool when he gets big."
Whether it was Ben's out-going attitude, mad ball-handling skills, or just his Chuck Taylor's that convinced them, I couldn't help but think, yeah boys, he will be. :)
This one has me smiling from ear to ear. What a great story to remember. Ben will, indeed, be one of the cool kids. And may he (and C + T) also be the kid who grows up to treat others the way they treated him. :)
ReplyDeleteOh yes! such a great golden rule moment :)

ReplyDelete*Melt. The things kids say. And I concur, he is already one of the cool kids.
