mega mitigation

Well, the weekend that we knew was coming did and we tackled the drainage and slope issue that exacerbated our Spring flooding.  Because we have pea gravel on this side of the house where the flooding happened, we didn't really know the slope of the dirt beneath.

When I ordered the fill dirt, I thought, (as did our friend Cole,) that we were going to pull the gravel back a bit, fill in some dirt, and put the gravel back over.  When I got home to ALL of the pea gravel in the driveway, I discovered the project was a bit more involved.  The boys removed all the gravel, re-graded,  extended drains, and engineered.  The next day Ryan and I put down all new landscape fabric and attached ice and water shield to the house, and put the gravel back.  It was absolutely exhausting, but will provide peace-of-mind and hopefully keep us dry if that level of wet weather ever returns.  I feel a lot better about ordering new carpet knowing we've done just about all we can to protect it.  I can't even imagine what life will be like with 50% of our square footage back.

Ben was thrilled at the numerous piles of rocks and dirt.

"I just love this kind of work."

the new drain

they also rebuilt this window well, added water protection and made it taller

When it was all done it looked like we hadn't touched it.  Thankless reward after an entire weekend of back-breaking work.  Big thanks to Uncole and Jim for their help!!

  1. Holy cow, I am tired just reading about this!!! As someone who has survived basement issues, I'll just say I'm glad this is over and glad carpet is in. :)
