Nap Jammies

Yep, it's new to me too!! In all my years of babysitting and nannying, I don't think the concept of nap jammies ever came up.  I guess when kiddos were that dirty maybe they just napped pants-less or I changed their clothes for the day?  I really have no recollection of how I dealt with the morning park, dog-bed, dog water, and general boy adventure dirtied clothes.   Last week it occurred to me that if we didn't institute nap jammies in our house, then Ben would wear two outfits each day.  While this fashion loving Mama would love the latter, our Mother Earth would not.  So far I think it might even help with the transition to nap and its similarity to bed-time.

When we first instituted the regime change, these were the only light cotton jammies we had on hand.
practicing :)

Off he goes to find Jelly

Oh, Snug, horizontal and mis-matched stripes-how do I love thee?

19 months and a couple things we've done right

The last month seemed like perhaps the fastest yet since Ben has blessed our lives.  While lots of the major baby milestones are passed, it seems like Ben changes more, and at a more rapid pace all the time. As many predicted, his babbling has turned into more words and he is using the correct words for objects more often.  He greets me with Mama in the mornings regularly and we even got a couple "Anna's" last week as he saw her coming down the stairs.  I've slowed my hurry and am trying to enjoy each new recognition or word as they come.  Ryan claims Ben said, "ba ball wit DaDa," while I was gone.  Now ball and dada are regular words and he was playing ball with DaDa, but whether there was a "wit" in there remains in question:).  He tries harder to mimic more sounds that we say and they sound closer to the actual words than before.  Ben certainly understands more requests each day and remains fiercely independent, fearless, and out-going.
Being outside and reading books are still his two favorite activities and balls entertain him for lots of the day.  He now has 5 or 6 different sized and colored balls and I think he has room to love many more.  I find myself knowingly standing alot as any open lap is quickly filled with Ben and a book.  I lovingly refer to him as the "Lap Monster."  Eric Carle's Grouchy Ladybug, Pancakes Pancakes and Very Busy Spider are still the favorites along with Goodnight Moon, My Very Own Name and a little board book about a quacking duck.  We ALL wish Ben would let us read any of the MANY other books in his collection, but for now he likes what he knows and knows what he likes.

In regards to the above titled, a couple things we've done right, are two of Ben's favorite things that I know will serve him well, long into the future: vacuuming and laundry.  He has long helped put the laundry into the washer and from the washer to the dryer, but while I was gone he took his skills one step further.   After dousing himself with his own water, MeeMee dried Ben's pants in the dryer and later brought them to him and handed them to him.  She watched him get distracted and drop them.  A short time later when she finally went to put his pants back on once and for all they could not be found:(.  After a lengthy search they were discovered back in the dryer-door closed :).
Ben shares my first love of the vacuum.  Love is the only proper word here as he kisses her (Tante named MeeMee's Hoover, Hoovina) whenever he sees her and oohs and aaahs at her much the same way he does Jelly.  There is also a complete and utter earth-shattering, life-ending break down anytime you fire up Hoovina and then stop.  At least one solid hour of vacuuming is necessary to avoid the breakdown so I mostly try to avoid turning her on when Ben is around.  He loves her the same, plugged in or not:).  So, I think we're off to an OK start.......fearless, ball-loving, rough and tumble chap who loves to vacuum and do laundry???
Sounds like the perfect on-line dating profile to me.

Everybody's Workin' for the Weekend

Ok, so not EVERYBODY, but I had to put my time in at 3123 in the ICT over the last couple days.  I made the solo trek back Saturday afternoon and immediately drove to Lowe's to get my hands on whatever I could to spruce the curb appeal of our house.  I was a couple weeks early for many of the plants I am used to, but took advantage of MeeMee's spring break to leave Ben in Denver and really get busy.  I gathered things we needed and wanted including our summer wardrobes; planted, pruned and mulched with reckless abandon; turned on the well and sprinklers; arranged lawn care; chatted with friends and neighbors; watched b-ball and had breakfast with friends; and re-cleaned the whole house, all in under 40 hours.  Yes I also got two almost full nights' sleep in:).
It was a whirlwind but I was very proud of myself for taking on not only the usual tasks but also many things I've never done before.  I was handy with a power tool or two before meeting Ryan and it's important to me to be able to do things he usually does.  I can now add wells and sprinklers to my SAHM resume:).

I had to reach beneath that red knob to find the hidden pipe and my
hand emerged covered in worms-eeeew!

Cut out some pine trees to replace with this.  I think the trailers will look nice.

Some columbines for a nod to CO and lots of vinca and periwinkle to mound out and over.  Finding drought tolerant plants in the land of rampant over-watering was not easy.

The boys had fun while I was gone and Ben had lots of fun with MeeMee Monday shopping and going to the park.  Ryan admitted that caring for Ben was exhausting and a little bird told me he even quipped one morning, "whew, no wonder Jess is exhausted by the end of the day."
Ryan did make one fatal mistake during his solo Ben-care time :(.  Before I left, I told him the most important thing about the whole weekend was that Ben have his UNC shirt (that matches mine and that we have both worn for every game of the tourney) on by game-time!! Well, Ryan failed to plan and failed to take Ben's shirt with him to Grandpa Jim and Aunt Christy's birthday celebration.  So, of course, our Tarheels lost:(.  When I start talking to Ryan again I'll be sure to let you know what his punishment is.

Uniquely Wichita

Not long after we moved to Wichita almost 4 years ago, I began the following Facebook Note:

Uniquely Wichita.......(for the most part)

by Jess Heimer on Saturday, August 1, 2009 at 8:15am ·
I have been thinking lately of collecting thoughts about the things i encounter living in wichita that i might never have experienced elsewhere. The good, the bad, the ugly and the ?????.......

1. an entire population that pronounces words differently and is hell bent that they are right and the whole rest of the world is saying it wrong. El Dorado (the a is soft people) Arkansas is not are kansas and don't get me started on Greenwich.

2. lightning bugs! I love 'em. ( i know they are lots of places, but i never lived with them in the mountain west.)

3. running past a gaggle of girl runners at 6 am (most in full make-up) all heavily perfumed, and wearing nearly matching running attire. This one really makes me miss boulder and yes, I realize this one is probably also true in Dallas.

4. we have more international friends here than I dreamed. We are often the minority being from the US. Watching them co-exist among born and bred flatlanders can be quite entertaining.

5. Luciano is right that the sunsets on the edge of town are very tuscan-like, and they last much longer without 14000 foot peaks in the way.

to be continued

Differences and idiosyncrasies of living in the Midwest continued to occur to me as we lived there and I often thought I should revisit and update my "note."  Now having 4+ months to look back on our time in Wichita, I can appreciate a lot about it.  Warning!!! Digression approaching...........

Since meeting Ryan more than seven years ago (wow!), most parts of our lives have involved planning for or hoping for a next step, new job, or next big thing......

Meet

Fall in love

Build house

Hope for Ring (one of us)

Get ring....Plan wedding

Quit job wedding was planned around

Get new job far away from house and try to sell house

Lose new job 4.5 months after marriage
(yep, kinda felt like I looked about to jump out of a plane)

Move to new state for new job

Wait, wait, wait for Europe trip to start building a family

Try, try and try some more for 2 to become 3

Take break from family building and dig into remodeling

SURPRISE!!

live

try to move home

Yep, after some time to reflect, the best part about Wichita beyond some of the lifelong friendships we formed, was that is was where we finally just lived.  For the first year of Ben's life, nothing else mattered.  It was just the 5 (pups too) of us living.  Yes the remodeling loomed but little else really mattered than just being.......our little happy family.

Life is all about what's next, and next steps, and progress, and for Ryan and I, a fair amount of general productivity.  All of that is natural, healthy and good.  I am ever so thankful though for what became Uniquely Wichita for me, and for the fondness with which it will allow me to look back on our time there.

As our family sits at yet another crossroads, waiting to really be home at home in Colorado, my Crazy Aunt Mary shared some words that SO embody the journey of life for me........

It's SO worth it :)
